- March 14, the State Duma rejected the proposal of the Communist Party on a vote of no confidence in the government of Mikhail Kasyanov . 127 deputies voted in support, 76 voted against, 5 abstained, the rest did not participate in the vote. To approve the project, at least 226 votes were required [1] . Despite the negative voting results, the government’s position was weakened [2] [3] .

- On April 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Federal Assembly with an annual message focusing on the restoration of constitutional order in Chechnya, judicial, tax, and budget reforms [4] .

- On September 11, Vladimir Putin was the first world leader to send US President George W. Bush a telegram of condolences over the attacks .

- On October 17, Vladimir Putin announced the closure of the Russian naval base in Kamran in Vietnam on January 1, 2002 and the withdrawal of the electronic center from Lourdes in Cuba.
- October 25, Vladimir Putin signed the Land Code .
December
- On December 13, U.S. President George W. Bush officially notified Russia of the U.S. withdrawal from the 1972 Russian-American Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty . Putin called Bush’s decision erroneous. On June 12, 2002, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the treaty.
- On December 25, the terrorist Salman Raduyev was found guilty of serious crimes by the Supreme Court of Dagestan and sentenced to life imprisonment.
