The Tasumal zone is part of the wider archaeological region of Chalchuap with a total area of about 10 km², where other archaeological sites are also located: Pampé , Casablanca , Trapiche and Las Victorias . Calchuapa is a region that has been influenced not only by nearby Copan , but also contains a number of stylistic elements characteristic of Central Mexico's monuments, such as Teotihuacan or Toltec architecture in Tula .

The ruins of 100-1200, a complex system of drainage canals, several graves, several small pyramids, palaces and ritual objects were discovered in Tasumal. The heyday of the city fell on the classical period (250-900 years BC). Tasumal experienced the effects of the eruption of the Ilopango volcano and was abandoned for several hundred years, until the beginning of the 5th century AD. e. [1] . Around the year 900, a Toltec-style pyramid, a large ball-stadium, and several other structures were built. Around 1200, Tasumal was completely abandoned.

Tasumal ruins are considered the best preserved and most important ruins in Salvador. Artifacts testify to the ancient trade developed between Tasumal and such remote places as the territories of present-day Panama and Mexico . The area of the ancient city was about 10 km², but a significant part of it is hidden under the buildings of the modern city.
