Dionysius (Metropolitan of Moscow)

Metropolitan Dionysius (? - 1587 , Khutynsky Monastery ) - Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia . Metropolitan Dionysius was an intelligent, educated and eloquent man of his time, for which he received the name "wise grammar."

Khutynsky monastery

Little information has been preserved about Metropolitan Dionysius. It is known that in 1577 he was abbot of the Khutynsky monastery . In February 1581 he was consecrated bishop and elevated to the rank of Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia.

Under him, Tsar Ivan the Terrible died (March 18, 1584) and was married to the kingdom of Fyodor Ivanovich . The archpastoral ministry of Bishop Dionysius took place in a tense atmosphere, when there was a struggle for influence on the tsar between Boris Godunov and the princes of Shuisky. The metropolitan sought to reconcile the warring parties, and for some time he achieved success in this. The financial needs of the state were such that this metropolitan was supposed to surrender at the 1584 council many of the benefits of church ownership.

In 1586, deprived of the pulpit and exiled to the Khutynsky monastery for exposing the Tsar’s brother-in-law Boris Godunov . He died in 1587 in the Khutynsky monastery.
