The Irish League Cup is the Cup of the Aircom Premier League , which is played by elite league clubs, but sometimes teams of lower divisions are invited. The format of the tournament often changes. It was first played in 1973, replacing a similar tournament - the Irish League Trophy , which has been held since 1922. The first winner of the cup was Waterford United .
