Type Forrestal ( Eng. Forrestal class ) - a series of heavy attack aircraft carriers of the United States in the 1950s . They were created after the re-evaluation by the high military command of the effectiveness of the fleet based on the combat use of aircraft carriers in the Korean War and the allocation of funds for the construction of new large ships. The basis of the design of Forrestol aircraft carriers was also the design solution of the unrealized United States aircraft carrier series. In the years 1952 - 1959 four aircraft carriers of the Forrestol type were built, which became the largest among the warships built before them. Modernization of the Forrestal type was also the latest series of aircraft carriers of the Kitty Hawk type . Carriers of the Forrestal type were used in a number of conflicts, including the Vietnam War, and for two decades, together with the Kitty Hawk type, formed the basis of the US carrier fleet before the advent of the Nimitz type aircraft carriers. In later years, Forrestol-type aircraft carriers were partially withdrawn to the reserve or converted into training aircraft carriers, and they were finally withdrawn from service in 1993-1998 .
