Sports career
During his playing career, he won seven victories in major professional tournaments: at Masters (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964), at the US Open (1960) and at the British Open (1961, 1962). The most successful for him was the period from 1960 to 1963 , when he won 29 victories in the PGA Tour. At this time, the athlete had a large group of fans, nicknamed the “Arnie Army”, who accompanied him at each competition [3] .
He also worked as a TV presenter, starred in films and acted as a producer in his own golf show. In addition, he published books on golf. Thanks to his diverse activities, in 1967 he became the first golfer to earn a million dollars.
He played his last tournament in 2004 , and in October 2006 decided to leave professional golf [4] .
September 30, 2009 was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal . Honorary Doctor of Law, University of St Andrews (2010).
