Oyama, Heiichiro

Keiichiro Oyama ( Japanese: 大 山 平 一郎 ; born July 31, 1947 , Kyoto ) is a Japanese-American violist and conductor.

He studied at the Toho High School of Music as a violinist, then at the Guildhall School of Music with Ifra Niman , William Plit and Thurston Darth, and finally at the Indiana School of Music under Joseph Gingold , Ruggiero Ricci , Franco Gulli (violin), William Primrose (viola), Janos Starker and Menachem Pressler (chamber ensemble). In 1968 , he won the London Carl Flush International Violin Competition in London.

Living and working mainly in the USA, Oyama performed a lot as an ensemble musician, and in 1979-1992. was the first viola of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , since 1987 combining these duties with the post of second conductor. In 1983 , he led the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, which he currently leads. At the same time, Oyama was the music director and conductor of such groups as the Northwest Chamber Orchestra from Seattle ( 1985 - 1987 ), the Asia-America Symphony Orchestra from Los Angeles ( 1990 - 2000 ), and the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra from Fukuoka ( 1999 - 2004 ), Osaka Symphony Orchestra ( 2004 - 2008 ). In 1991 - 1997 Oyama was also the artistic director of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. In 1973 - 2002 he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles .

The most important of Oyama’s conducting recordings is all the piano concerts of Ludwig van Beethoven with pianist Takahiro Sonoda and the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra. As an viola player, he participated in the recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's piano quartets ( 1990 ), in which Andre Previn played the piano part.
