9M112 "Cobra"

Cobra (the index of the complex is 9K112 (-1) , missiles - 9M112 (M) , according to the classification of the United States Defense Ministry and NATO - AT-8 Songster , literally “singer”) - the Soviet complex of guided weapons of the tank (KUVT) with radio command guidance, designed for fighting tanks, objects of armored vehicles, small-sized targets such as bunkers, bunkers and low-flying helicopters. Shooting can be carried out from the standard smooth-bore 125-mm gun 2A46 of the T-64 and T-80 tanks.

URS 9M112 in the tray of the loading mechanism of the T-64 tank.

Developed by Design Bureau “Tochmash” (Moscow) under the guidance of A. Nudelman . In 1976 it was adopted by the USSR.

Shooting with a guided active-reactive projectile (URS) can be fired from the tank on the move and in place on any ground, by introducing the initial elevation angle of the gun, followed by the programmed launch of the URS to the line of sight. The URS is made in a two-compartment layout — a warhead and an engine compartment.

Served as the basis for further development.

History

In 1975, tests were carried out on the 9K112 Kobra complex as part of the Object 447, which was a converted T-64A tank equipped with a 1G21 quantum rangefinder and a Kobra missile system with a 9M112 missile. The missile was launched from a standard D-81 cannon (2A46). After the successful completion of the tests, the modernized T-64B tank with the 9K112 missile system (with the 9M112 missile) was put into service in 1976.

On June 6, 1978, by decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the T-80B tank was adopted (tests were carried out on the T-80B object 219P), equipped with a 2A46-2 gun, 9K112-1 guided weapons complex (with 9M112M missile) and control system fire (СУО) 1А33 "Ob" consisting of: a quantum sight-range finder of a tracking device 1G42, electronic ballistic computer 1V517 with automatic input of corrections, electro-hydraulic two-plane gun stabilizer 2E26M, 1G43 shot resolution unit and a set of sensors. Subsequently, the Kobra complex was equipped with the main tanks with dynamic protection of the T-64BV and T-80BV types and some other prototypes and small-series vehicles: “Object 219RD”, “Object 487”, “Object 219A”, etc.

In 1979, at the Gorokhovets training range , successful firing was carried out at night, as well as tests on the use of the Cobra KUV helicopter. Night launches at a maximum range of up to 4 km were provided by the use of two to three 120-mm illuminating mines, which were fired at intervals of 4-8 s.

Rocket Modifications

The improvement of the “Cobra” was carried out mainly in the direction of increasing the armor penetration of the warhead, as well as improving the design, increasing the reliability of missiles and reducing the complexity of its production. Have been developed:

  • 9M112 - the basic version of the missile, adopted into service in 1976 as part of the KUVT 9K112 of the T-64B;
  • 9M112M - a modernized modification tested in 1977 and adopted for service in 1978 as part of the KUVT 9K112-1 of the T-80B tank, armor penetration increased by 20%. In a series from the end of 1979;
  • 9M112M2 - version 9M112 with armor penetration increased by 40% compared with the original sample, underwent flight testing in 1983. Missile dimensions and operating conditions remained unchanged. The head compartment 9H46 of this modification of the missile was equipped with warhead type 9H138;
  • 9M124 - a modification similar in design to 9M112M2, but having a 9N145-type head compartment equipped with an even more powerful warhead 9N144, characterized by a cumulative funnel material, explosive material and, accordingly, increased efficiency (relative to warhead 9N138) (armor penetration is increased by 80% compared to the basic version of “Cobra” );
  • 9M128 - a missile of the modernized Agon complex with a tandem warhead, development began in 1984. Armor penetration was achieved up to 650 mm of homogeneous armor, but by 1985, when the technical design was prepared and the technical documentation was developed, the Svir and Reflex complexes with laser-guided targets had already been adopted, so all the newly produced tanks of the T- family 80 were equipped with these complexes. In 1986, the Agon entered state tests, and in 1988 it was adopted.

The control system KUVT "Cobra" remained unchanged and allows you to launch all types of missiles.
