In 1940, he successfully graduated from the Borisoglebsky flying club, then studied at the Balashov Military Aviation Pilot School , after which in 1942 he was sent to the army. He fought in the 15th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment of the 277th Assault Aviation Division on the Leningrad and 3rd Belorussian fronts. He took part in the battles to release Leningrad and the liberation of the Leningrad region , Vyborg , Estonia , Latvia and Belarus , participated in the battles for the capture of Koenigsberg . During the war, he went from a rank-and-file pilot to commander of an air squadron. Together with him, the illustrious air aces served in the regiment: twice Heroes of the Soviet Union Aleksenko V.A. , Mylnikov G.M. and Kungurtsev E.M. , Hero of the Soviet Union N.A. Kalenov and others.

By November 1944, made 180 sorties to attack enemy targets, for which the command was presented to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 19, 1945, for exemplary performance of combat missions, courage and heroism shown in the fight against Nazi invaders, to the deputy squadron commander of the 15th guards assault air regiment of the 277th assault air division of the 1st air guard army Lieutenant A. N. Prokhorov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 6126).

For the successful attack of the enemy in the areas of Granz, Martemsdorf and Eisenberg (now Zhelyazna Gora in Poland ) in February 1945 A.N. Prokhorov was introduced to the Order of Alexander Nevsky. In the award sheet, the command indicated:

 Flying as a leader of the group from 4 to 10 aircraft, Senior Lieutenant A. N. Prokhorov had no cases of aircraft loss. As a result of bold actions, he personally destroyed 2 tanks, 13 vehicles and 10 wagons with cargoes, 2 tractors with guns, 2 artillery and 4 mortar batteries, a warehouse with ammunition, 11 firing points and an enemy infantry company. On February 2, 1945, as a part of a group of 5 aircraft in the area of ​​the settlement of Granz, as a result of a successful attack, 5 vehicles were destroyed, 2 anti-aircraft and 3 artillery batteries were suppressed. On February 22, 1945, in the Martemsdorf area, Senior Lieutenant A.N. Prokhorov, with a group of 3 attack aircraft, accompanying the infantry offensive, destroyed 5 vehicles with cargo, suppressed artillery battery fire and 5 firing points. On March 2, 1945, accompanied by an infantry offensive in the area of ​​the village of Eisenberg, a group of 5 attack aircraft destroyed 5 vehicles and 3 wagons with cargo, a warehouse with ammunition, and suppressed the fire of artillery and anti-aircraft batteries. 

For bold and decisive actions, inflicting significant losses on the enemy in his military equipment, the commander of the air squadron of the 15th guards assault air regiment, senior lieutenant A. N. Prokhorov, was awarded the Order of Alexander by order of the 1st Air Army Commander No. 031 / n dated April 28, 1945 Nevsky number 26943.

In total, by the time the Great Patriotic War ended, Captain A. N. Prokhorov had made 236 sorties. For new military distinctions, exemplary fulfillment of command assignments at the front of the struggle against the German invaders, giving the right to receive the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, on June 29, 1945 he was awarded the second Gold Star medal (No. 64). In the city of Borisoglebsk, Voronezh region, a bronze bust of the Hero is installed. During the war, the brave pilot was awarded many awards, becoming a holder of the Order of Lenin, three orders of the Red Banner, orders of Alexander Nevsky, World War 1 degree and the Red Star.

After World War II, A.N. Prokhorov decided to devote his life to the further strengthening of the Air Force of the Soviet Army . In 1950, he successfully graduated from the Red Banner Air Force Academy , commanded an assault aviation regiment. Since 1968, Colonel A.N. Prokhorov has been teaching at the Higher Military Aviation Engineering School, including being the deputy head of this school. In 1976, he was awarded the military rank of Major General. Since 1979, he was again on teaching at the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze . Major General A. N. Prokhorov transferred all his knowledge and rich combat experience to young commanders.

In the post-war period, several more orders were added to the front-line awards of the veteran - World War I degree, Red Star, "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" III degree. Dismissed from the army in 1988. He lived in Moscow . He died on May 27, 2002, was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery .
