Story
The film takes place on the Krasnogorsk railway within one day (the name of the road is fictitious, but the shooting was made on the Krasnoyarsk railway ).
The film has several storylines: the chief of the road Urzhumov and the ministry; conductor Luda and assistant driver Sanka; passengers of the first carriage and Luda; Znachndor Dzhelnin and representative of the Gvozdev oil refinery; driver Ageich, Ministry of Railways and others.
The capacity of the road is lower than necessary. Factories do not constantly fit into the loading time of wagons, thereby knocking down transportation schedules. Due to another violation - non-unloading from the gondola car of the entire steel sheet - an accident occurs: in the curve, the gondola car , loaded with a stone from the quarry over the remaining unloaded steel sheet and thus overloaded one and a half times, goes off the rails and touches the support of the contact network , the movement is interrupted, it is delayed somewhat dozens of trains, including passenger ones. After the restoration of traffic, the dispatcher ( Vladimir Gostyukhin ) has the responsibility to carry out trains accumulated in the section and not to disrupt passenger trains from the schedule, including company train No. 3 Krasnoyarsk - Moscow . Having stepped in for a shift, the dispatcher begins to restore movement on the site. Mutually exclusive orders are received from the deputy chief of the road: first enter the company train on the schedule, then stop it and drive three empty tank cars to be loaded into the refinery for loading.
The wife distracts the dispatcher with phone calls, demanding that he go to the chief of the road department and get the apartment allocated. The boss, busy with his affairs, in a rage offers the dispatcher to look for work easier, inflicting an undeserved offense on him. Another wife’s call distracts the frustrated dispatcher, as a result of which he makes a mistake: he puts the freight train under overtaking by the branded train on a side track of insufficient length, due to which the tail of the train remains on the main track; at the same time, for some reason it is possible to open the input traffic light through the pass on the main path, although this should not be the case with the busy switch section. Realizing his mistake, the dispatcher orders the station attendant to close the input signal and pull the freight train forward to clear the main path. The entrance traffic light closes right in front of a passenger train running at high speed; the driver of the "troika" is forced to apply emergency braking . The train of empty tanks is moving forward, but due to the appearance of a “wave” in the train, the defective automatic coupling of the last carriage, which remains on the main track, breaks off. The locomotive of the passenger train collides with the tank, the locomotive crew is injured, and subsequently the assistant driver dies in the hospital during the operation.
Further, in the regional committee near Kolobov, a meeting of directors of enterprises and the chief of the road is held, where the reasons for the unsatisfactory operation of the railway are examined and a decision is made to jointly eliminate the shortcomings.
