Etymology
The name of the genus Civettictis and the species civetta comes from fr. civette , from ital. zibetto , from medieval lat. zibethum , from arab. زباد ( zabād ) denoting cibet [3] .
Description
The body shape of the African civet is similar to a cat. She has a wide head with a pointed muzzle, short, sharp ears, slightly obliquely cut eyes and round pupils. The body of the African civet is long and thick. The tail is of medium length and approximately half the length of the body. Legs are medium length. Her fur is rough and rather rare. The mane stretches in the middle of the body and ends at the tail. The main color of the coat is ash-yellowish-gray, on which dark brown spots often appear. In different individuals, they are located in different places. On the tail of the African civet is the thickest fur. On the tail, she has about 5 black rings, and it ends with a dark brown tip. Usually the body length of African civet does not exceed 65 cm. The length of the tail is about 30 cm. The height at the withers is 25-30 cm.
In captivity, African civets are kept only in cages, fed with meat and especially birds. If the civet is caught young, she soon becomes tame.
