Silent Hill 2 ( eng. Silent Hill: Revelation , sometimes also referred to as 3D in the title [2] , literally - “Silent Hill: Revelation” [6] ) - Michael J. Bassett's horror film , sequel to the 2006 thriller “ Silent Hill” ”With Rada Mitchell and Jodelle Ferland in the lead roles [K 1] . The plot of the film is based on the plot of the computer game Silent Hill 3 . The premiere in the USA took place on October 26 [8] [9] , in Russia - a day earlier, on October 25, 2012 [10] . The tape almost unanimously received extremely negative reviews from critics who noted a misunderstanding of the source material, the fragmentary appearance of most minor characters and a general decrease in quality compared to the first picture. Only visual effects and the image of the main character were praised. With a budget of $ 20 million, the film at the box office has collected over 52 million [4] . For almost all financial indicators, "Silent Hill 2" is inferior to the first part [11] . The tape received seven nominations in various awards, including taking second place in the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for best makeup and special effects.

Story

After the events of the first film, Rose Dasilva and her adopted daughter Sharon remained in a foggy reality. Rose was able to convey Sharon to her husband Christopher using the seal of Metatron, and she remains in a foggy world. Sharon had no memories of a trip to Silent Hill, and Christopher told her that Rose was killed in a car accident.

The second film begins years later. Christopher and Sharon live under the names Harry and Heather Mason respectively. They have to regularly change their place of residence in order to hide from the sect [12] . Meanwhile, Heather herself has nightmares about Silent Hill and her demonic second half - Alessa. On the way to another new school, Heather tries to talk with Douglas Cartland, a private detective hired by the sect, but she runs away from him. In class, she meets newcomer Vincent [13] . After class, Heather notices Douglas watching her, and tells her father over the phone, agreeing to meet with him at the mall. Harry was abducted immediately after the telephone call. In the mall where Heather was waiting for Harry, a transition to a nightmare of the other world with monsters takes place, where one of them - the Missionary - kills Douglas when he tries to warn Heather about the danger. After returning to basic reality, Heather runs out of the mall at the moment the police take out Douglas’s corpse.

Heather, accompanied by Vincent, returns home, where he finds an occult symbol painted on the wall and a message written on the wall: “Go to Silent Hill” [14] . Having taken the first half of Metatron’s seal, Heather and Vincent travel to a foggy city. On the way, Heather reads Harry Mason's diary and finds out that she is the incarnation of Alessa Gillespie. On the way, they make a stop at the motel, where Vincent tells her that he is the son of Claudia Wolf, the high priestess of the Order of Valtiel - a sect that once ruled Silent Hill. But now that Alessa has returned, they are forced to hide from her in the dungeons. And Heather is the only chance to destroy the demon and free the sect. Vincent was sent to bring Heather to the city, but he doubts his actions, since she is the bright side of Alessa. Vincent reports that Heather can be helped by his grandfather - Leonard Wulf, who is in a psychiatric hospital. At this moment, a transition to the other world takes place, Vincent is abducted by a monster, and Heather loses consciousness.

Recovering, Heather goes to Silent Hill. In place, Heather meets Dahlia Gillespie, mother of Alessa. She explains that the dark side of Alessa controls the city. Heather takes refuge in one of the buildings and realizes that she has fallen into the trap of a certain creature. She helps a girl named Sookie get out of the cellophane web, however, the Spider Mannequin [13] still takes her. Meanwhile, Claudia declares Vincent a traitor and orders him to be sent for "treatment" in a psychiatric hospital teeming with monsters. Heather also goes to the hospital where he is attacked by a monster Lobotomy and kills him. She finds Leonard’s ward. However, he is blind and not quite sane. The man tells her that his own daughter, who, according to him, “is even worse,” was put to hospital by him. Heather hands him a seal in the hope that he will help her. He says that this is the key that reveals the true nature of things and pierces his stomach with a seal. The two halves reunite and he turns into a monster. Heather manages to kill him, but she is faced with a new problem - patients who are trying to strangle the girl through the bars of the cells. Suddenly, the Pyramid-headed [13] appears and cuts his hands. He does not touch Heather. She finds Vincent, who is in a room filled with nurses [13] , reacting to any sound and movement and helps him free himself.

Heather and Vincent head to Lake Side Park in search of Harry. There they are met by the Brotherhood - the most faithful servants of the order. Vincent distracts the sectarians, and Heather makes his way to the amusement park, where he meets Alessa's Remembrance and reunites with her. Finding the sectarians who abducted Harry, Heather discovers that she is destined to be a temporary refuge for the newborn god, in whom the members of the Order holyly believe. Claudia demands a seal from a girl. Heather hands her to her with the words: "I want to see your true essence." Touching the amulet, Claudia turns into the monster of the Missionary who killed Douglas. She tries to attack Heather, but the Pyramid-headed manages to intervene in time. The battle begins, from which the latter emerges victorious, having cut off Claudia's head. On the outskirts of Silent Hill, Vincent notices that the ashes from the sky have ceased to pour. Vincent and Heather leave the foggy Silent Hill, and Harry decides to stay to find Rose.

Walking away from Silent Hill, Vincent and Heather stop the truck with driver Travis, who says he has not been to these parts for a long time. When meeting him, Heather introduces himself by his real name - Sharon. They ask to be taken away from Silent Hill. Several police cars and the bus of the Ryall County State Prison drive towards them, driving into Silent Hill. The camera slowly rotates around the roadside shield until it is transferred back to the “foggy world”, where the inscription “Welcome to Silent Hill” is visible on the back of the shield.

Origin

The director of the previous film, Christoph Gahn, originally planned to take up the shooting of the second motion picture. He wanted to avoid mistakes made while working on the first film and agreed with the producers to preserve the visual style of the series. Gan planned to start filming after finishing work on such projects as Vodila ( Driver ) and Samurai Path ( Onimusha ) [18] . However, at the end of 2006 he made a statement stating that due to his work he could not take the place of the director of the sequel, but would prefer to recommend one of his European colleagues familiar to him [19] , preferably a Frenchman. Christophe made a special emphasis on the fact that the film should be "not shot in Hollywood" [18] .

Similar statements were made in 2007 by Silent Hill scriptwriter Roger Avery , saying that he was not going to participate in making the film if Gan did not take part in it [20] . Later, writer Bret Ellis voiced the scriptwriter's intention to change his mind [21] . Roger wrote the script to continue [22] . However, after Avery was convicted in September 2009 for causing negligence of one year in prison for hitting a pedestrian, the question of his participation in the filming of the film again became unclear [1] [23] . Masahari Ito offered to participate in the design of monsters, but he refused [1] . The loss of key co-authors of the film hindered the process of creating the picture [24] .

Filming

On November 3, 2010, at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, it was announced that the sequel would be directed by British film director Michael Bassett , produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody, and that the film was shot in stereoscopic format and will be called "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" [25] [26] . Michael Bassett is both the director and scriptwriter [27] . It was decided to skip the plot of Silent Hill 2 , taking as the basis the third part of the series [28] . The director said that the second part deserves a separate film [29] . Nevertheless, after the announcement, some journalists noted that the plot of the original picture left a very small number of ideas to continue, considering it extremely doubtful that the hero of Sean Bean will ever be able to see his daughter, not to mention starting off with her on the run [30] . The picture was also presented at Comic-Con 2012. Bassett brought two excerpts from the film to the conference - one showed a scene with a spider, the other fragment focused on the moment in which nurses approached Vincent chained to a gurney [29] .

Bassett, like Gan, was an avid player. He loved the horror elements of the series, although he admitted that he periodically activated the "regime of God" due to dissatisfaction with the combat system. He liked the first film, he believed that Christoph in his picture was trying to imagine an abstract and illogical world. The director agreed to use 3-D technologies to create a complete immersion in the world of the picture [31] and attract the audience to cinemas [32] . Since Silent Hill 2 belongs to the horror genre, Basset did not hesitate to periodically use a demonstration of disgusting and ugly things [31] . As a screenwriter, he believed that in the repetition of the plot of the game “there is no pleasure” [32] . For Michael as a writer, this was a challenge. He returned to the game many times and read materials clarifying the plot mythology and wanted to focus on the psychological twists of the narrative [27] . The changed plot should be fresh, interesting and understandable for neophytes . Bassett has been familiar with the producers of the painting since his time on Solomon Kane . Michael was required to build a story in which the second part was a continuation of the first, but largely autonomous from it [27] [32] . After the success of the first part, Konami welcomed the idea of ​​a new project. The producers at the Comic-Con in San Diego met with Bassett, who agreed to take part in its production [33] .

The musical accompaniment for the second film was written by Jeff Dunn and Akira Yamaoka , who worked together on the last film [34] . The director invited Danna to give the tracks more musicality and the introduction of orchestral elements [35] . Akira was also involved in the project as a favorite of the fans of the series - the most common question that the director was asked if Yamaoka would be the composer. Akira wrote several original tracks for the picture, and along with Dana adapted a number of old themes from the games [31] .

Filming started on March 7, 2011 [36] in Toronto [37] and was completed on May 14 of the same year [38] . Among the locations of Ontario were used Savels Road (the road to Silent Hill), Cherry Beach (Lakeside Amusement Park), Cambridge (Silent Hill Streets), Central High School (Brookhaven Hospital), Woodbine Center (Shopping Center) [39] . Bassett believed that there are fans who know much more about the universe of the game than he does. Nevertheless, the design aesthetically corresponds to the series [29] . Bassett said:

“I want to inform you that I just finished the last shooting day of SH2. It was great and difficult. I was surrounded by wonderful, extremely talented people who supported me. For some time I will not be able to evaluate how good the film will turn out, but I'm quite sure that it will look amazing. Give me about five months of post-production for editing, creating special effects and dubbing, and it will be seen there ” [38] .

Just to let you all know I've just finished the last day of principal photography on SH2. It's been both fantastic and challenging. Surrounded by great people with enormous talent who kept me on track throughout. How the final film hangs together, I won't know for a while, but I'm pretty certain it's going to at least look amazing. Give me about 5 months of post production for editing, fx and sound and then I'll know more.

The appearance of the main character, who is tormented by nightmares, is almost identical to the Heather from Silent Hill 3 . Fragmented scenes of birthday greetings, a call to his father, a trip by car to Silent Hill, as well as such visual details that played a particular role in the game, such as a piece of steel pipe, a flashlight, a Metatron seal, a red shoe, the Halo symbol of the Sun , fried dog, mannequin room, hospital map [17] , Robbie rabbit [53] , Valtiel statue and others. The recollection of Alessa, in the third part of the series behaved like a kind of zombie, in “Revelation” worked out deeper and conducts a dialogue about love and death. Criticism met the film more than coldly. At Rotten Tomatoes, the rating of the picture is only 5% [69] . The film was one of the worst films of 2012 [74] [75] . Metacritic aggregator rated Silent Hill: Revelation 3D 15%, noting that the filmmakers misunderstood the source material [70] .Sergei Krikun, a columnist for The World of Fantasy magazine, complained that monsters were not able to scare the audience, and the appearance of old heroes was not always justified.
