Demographic situation

Over the past 15 years, the population of the Republic of Karelia has decreased by approximately 80,000 people. In 2002, the death rate in Karelia exceeded the birth rate by 1.8 times, and in 2003 - by 1.9 times. [54]

In 2010, the demographic situation in Karelia remained difficult. The natural population decline continued. Most often, residents of Karelia die from diseases of the circulatory system, malignant neoplasms and alcohol poisoning. The process of β€œaging” of the population continues in the republic. [55]

According to preliminary results of the census of Russia , which was held in October 2010, the number of permanent population of the Republic of Karelia in comparison with the 2002 census decreased by 71 thousand people and amounts to 645.2 thousand people.

A decrease in the population was noted in all regions of the republic, but in some it is especially noticeable. Thus, the population of Suoyarvsky district decreased by 5.2 thousand people, Pudozhsky - by 5.8 thousand, Medvezhyegorsky - by 6.5 thousand, and Segezha - by almost 9 thousand. [56]

More detailed data on the population of the Republic of Karelia will become known after the official publication of the results of the census of Russia .
