Name Origin

Most likely, the lane got its name from the bell tower (built in 1800 - 1802 ) of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Strelka ( Solyanka , 5/2), under which it begins.

There is another version: on the site of the current church there was a church (known since the 16th century ), built, perhaps, of the type "like bells", that is, with a bell on top of the church. In some sources, the lane is called Podkolokolnikov .

The early name of the alley is Podkopaevsky , according to the ancient village of Podkopaevo located here. In the middle of the 19th century, the name Podkopaevsky passed to the neighboring Nikolsky Lane, previously called by the Church of St. Nicholas in Podkopay . When studying archival materials from the 19th century, this creates some confusion.

Description

Podkolokolny Lane goes east at an acute angle to the left of Solyanka Street through Khitrovskaya Square to Yauzsky and Pokrovsky Boulevards, forming at the beginning a “arrow” on which the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located on Strelka. From the left uphill, Small Ivanovsky and Podkopaevsky Lanes depart from it. From Khitrovskaya Square go down - Pevchesky and Peter and Paul Lanes, and Khitrovsky Lane rises up.

In 1935, Khitrovskaya Square and the alley of the same name received the name Maxim Gorky . The square existed even after the school building was built on it in the late 1930s according to the standard project of the architect K. I. Dzhus-Danilenko (demolished house 11-a in Podkolokolny Lane in 2010 ). [one]

The quarters of Podkolokolny Lane are included in the identified cultural heritage site “Attraction Place“ Ivanovskaya Gorka - Kulishki - Khitrovka “”.
