Creation History

Wheel B-4M on the background of the B-4 on a tracked carriage. Technical Museum of Tolyatti

The development of a wheeled gun carriage for a 203.4-mm howitzer B-4 was carried out in the OKB-221 at the Barricades plant as an initiative. From 1947 to 1954, the Barricades factory carried out repairs to the entire park of howitzers in service with the Soviet Army . By this time, the tractor used as a tractor was replaced by an artillery heavy tractor ( AT-T ), which had a speed of up to 35 km / h. Tracked chassis B-4 could not withstand such speed and collapsed.

The technical design of the new carriage was completed in April 1954, and in December 1954, two experienced gun carriages with 203.4-mm howitzer B-4 installed on them and a 152-mm Br-2 cannon were sent for testing.

New wheeled carriage was adopted in 1955 . The 203.4-mm howitzer on the new carriage received the B-4M index.
