Description

Females are wingless, males are winged. Males are usually larger than females. Males have 13-segmented antennae, females - 12-segmented. Males are black or brown, often with rusty red chest sclerites; females are colored brighter, usually with rusty red breasts. The body is in dense black and light hairs, which on the tergite of the abdomen often form a pattern, especially in females.

Biology

German wasps never build their own nests and parasitize in the nests of bees , spheroid and folded-winged wasps , less often other insects ( Diptera , Coleoptera , Lepidoptera , Blattodea flies). A female German wasp sneaks into a strange nest and lays eggs on the host larvae, which their own larvae feed on. Possessing a long sting, the Germans successfully defend themselves from wasps and bees and even inflict stinging on a person (the pain disappears only after a few hours).

Distribution

Prevail in the desert and arid regions of the Ethiopian, Palearctic, Indo-Malayan and Australian zoogeographic regions. More than 100 species from 20 genera are found in the Palearctic (Lelei, 2002). In the fauna of the former USSR there are about 50 species, 4 genera (Lelei, 1985).

Classification

There are about 500 species in the Palearctic (Manley and Pitts 2002), of which over 50 species (29 species in the USSR) are in the largest genus Dasylabris .
