The Roman Theater ( lat. Theatrum Mogontiacensium , German Römisches Theater ) in the city of Mainz - the capital of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate was excavated just a few years ago. It is located in close proximity to the Mainz Römisches Theater station, and was one of the largest Roman theaters north of the Alps. Its diameter was 116 meters, the width of the stage - 42 meters. The number of seats was 10,000.

History
Rome Mainz owes its importance to its advantageous geographical location at the mouth of the Main . From here it was possible to defend the border of the Roman Empire lying nearby and organize military campaigns against the Germans .
The last time the theater was mentioned in the XI century:
“Hoc etiam astruunt adhuc superstites theatri ruinae, quod Romano more ad ludos circenses et theatrica spectacle constructum est.” [2]
"The ruins of the theater, built according to the Roman custom for circus and theatrical performances, still stand on this spot."
Today on the ruins of the theater held musical and theatrical performances.
