Ishkun

Ishkun ( yucatec. Ixkún ) is an archaeological site of the Mayan civilization of the Peten Basin region. Located in the department of Pétain , Guatemala , northwest of Poptun .

Ishkun was built and settled in the pre-classical era, around 200 AD e., and reached a peak in its development in the late Classical era (about 600 - 900 years. BC. E.). The city occupied an area of ​​about 16 km². In its central part there were a stadium for playing tlachtle , temples, palaces, a complex "group E" and two pyramids. Found about 46 groups of residential buildings, 245 graves and several "chultuns", artificial caves for storing clean water.

Four nearby caves were used in the classical era as ceremonial objects.

Various stela covered with inscriptions and altars were found. Stele 4 reaches a height of 4 meters, among the Mayan steles in size - the second after found in Quirigua .
