Biography
Friedrich Justin Bertuch was born on September 30, 1747 in the city of Weimar. He studied theology and law at Jena University .

Since 1773, Bertouch helped Wieland edit the journal Mercur, then published, with the active participation of von Seckendorf , the Journal of Spanish and Portuguese Literature ( German: Magazin der spanischen und portugiesischen Litteratur , Dessau , three volumes were published in 1780-1783. ), in 1786, undertook with Kraus the publication of the Journal of Luxury and Fashion ( German: Journal des Luxus und der Moden ) - the first of its kind in Germany, which existed until 1827. Then Bertukh published: “Die Blaue Bibliothek aller Nationen” (11 volumes, Gotha, 1790–97) and the very widespread series “Illustrated Book for Children” ( German: Bilderbuch für Kinder ; 190 issues, Weimar, 1790-1822). , which served as a role model for subsequent editions of the same kind.
Bertukh was also involved in translations, mainly from Spanish. He owns the German processing of Don Quixote by Cervantes with the continuation of Avellaneda (6 vols, Leipzig, 1775–76; 1780–81).
In addition, F. Yu. Bertuh participated in the development of the plan for the publication of the Jena General Gazette ( German: Jenaische allgemeine Litteraturzeitung ), which had a great influence on the literary development of Germany, where Goethe , Schiller , Fichte , Humboldt and the Schlegel brothers collaborated .
Bertouch established the large publishing company Landesindustriecomptoir, around which a number of writers and artists grouped. In one of these branches ("Geographisches Institut"), "Allgemeine geographische Ephemeriden" began to be published, which Bertuh edited initially with Tsach , then with Gaspari .
