At the end of 1945, a machine and tractor workshop was set up on the northwestern outskirts of Lipetsk , the task of which was to repair tractor and combine engines. Later, the enterprise also mastered the repair of electric motors, the production of spare parts for tractors, and the repair of GAZ-51 automobiles. Due to the significantly expanded production volume in 1956, the workshop was transformed into a car repair plant .

In May 1960, the company received a new impetus in its development, when it was transferred to it from the Lipetsk Tractor Plant the production of starting engines designed to start the main engine of the tractor. In September of the same year, the first PD-10 water-cooled starting engine was launched.

In 1963, the Lipetsk Mechanical Plant (LMZ) was established on the basis of a car repair plant.

In 1966, the company mastered the production of an air-cooled starting engine. The process of transition of LMZ to a specialized production of small-displacement carburetor engines used as a starting device for medium-power diesel engines was completed.

In 1970, LMZ was transformed into the Starting Engine Plant (ZPD) of the Ministry of Tractor and Agricultural Engineering of the USSR.

By 1980, plant production grew to 157 thousand starting engines per year for the Lipetsk and Vladimir Tractor Plants. Also, ZPD produced parts for Mikhailovsky, Kharkov and Gomel factories of starting engines. In addition to industry enterprises, ZPD supplied products to 170 organizations and enterprises of the USSR and for export.

In the early 1990s, there was a significant drop in demand for the company's products due to the deep crisis that engulfed agricultural engineering in the former USSR. The production of the Lipetsk Starting Engine Plant fell to 50 thousand engines per year (the level of the mid-1960s), which makes up only 30% of the enterprise’s capacity. In connection with the new economic realities, the enterprise was transformed into the open joint-stock company “Starting Engine Plant” (OJSC “ZPD”).

By 2003, production of cylinder liners for automobiles of the GAZ family was established at the freed up capacities.

Currently [ when? ] The all-Russian market for the production and sale of starting engines for tractors is 40% occupied by the Lipetsk plant. Another 40% in Gomel ZPD. The remaining 20% of the market is held by various Russian enterprises specializing in the production and repair of agricultural machinery.

The partners of the Lipetsk Starting Engine Plant are organizations and industrial enterprises from Barnaul , Rostov-on-Don , Samara , Krasnoyarsk , Saratov , Stavropol and other Russian cities.

Today's situation

In 2009, the plant equipment was dismantled. In fact, in the workshops there is an enterprise for the production of aluminum products, LLC Window Structures Plant, as well as other trading enterprises; office building leased to third parties.
