Avzons ( Avsons , Apuls ; Greek Αὔσονες, Latin Ausoni ) - an ancient Italian tribe that lived in the southwestern part of Ancient Italy , in Campania and Puglia . Often confused with avrunki , with whom they have only common origin. The Avzons belonged to the Phaliskian -Latin branch of the ancient Italians , which together with them included the Falisks , Latins , Enotra and, probably, Siculas . Since the Samnites , who belonged to the Umbro-Oscan-Sabella branch, mixed with the Avzons, the latter are sometimes referred to as Oscan tribes. The opinion was expressed that the avzones received their name from the Calabrian coastal city of Uzenta [1] .
The Avzons spoke the language of the Indo-European language family and probably settled in Italy in the 17th century BC. e. Around 1250 BC e. part of the Avzons crossed to Sicily . During the Roman conquest of the Apennine Peninsula, the main cities of the Avzons were destroyed.
Very little information has been preserved about the Avzon tribe, the main sources are the legendary works of ancient authors. In ancient Roman poetry, the name "Avzona" was used as the general name of the Italians (Italians), and " Avzonia " as the poetic name of Italy. In the Byzantine artistic tradition, the concept of “avzona” until the 12th century was used as a self-name - for example, the poet John Geometr wrote so about the Bulgarian-Byzantine wars: “I would never say that the Mysian arrows are stronger than the Avzon copies”.
From the name of this nation comes the name Ausonius (Habson) .
