World and European Championships
Yvette Baker, nee Haig [1] , is currently the most titled British orienteer. At 15, she was included in the relay team at the 1983 World Cup in Hungary. [2] Probably the youngest participant in the history of orienteering world championships.
Over the next championships, I regularly got into the top ten, but could not “catch” on the prize places. This continued until 1993, when Yvette won the bronze medal at the classic distance. [3] This medal was the first medal won by orienteers from foggy Albion at the World Championships. [four]
In total, from 1983 to 2001, Yvette participated in 11 world championships and won four medals, [4] one of which is gold - she won a short distance at the 1999 World Inverness Home Championships. [5]
At the third European Championships in Truskavets in 2000, she won two bronze medals. Yvette was the third in the classic distance and in the relay race as part of the women's team of Great Britain. [6]
Club career
Like most orienteers from the world elite stands for Scandinavian clubs. In 1996, as part of the Norwegian club, Bäkkelagets SK won the prestigious Finnish relay race Venla . [7] The following year she was able to repeat her success by winning the Venla relay race with her club for the second time in a row. [8]
Yvette was born in the United States, grew up in the UK, and lived in Denmark for a long time. After completing a career, she moved to New Zealand.
