The first generation Fabia (internal code 6Y ) was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, and production of this model began in October of that year. In August 2000, the production of a version of the Fabia Combi wagon began , and in September the car was presented at the Paris Motor Show [4] . The third version of the Fabia Sedan model was presented to the public in February 2001 at the Geneva Motor Show , in May the car went on sale [5] .

It was the first Škoda model to use the Volkswagen Group A04 platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Polo Mk IV and SEAT Ibiza . The range of modifications started from 1.2 6V Classic (which was cheaper than the smaller 3-door 1.0 Volkswagen Lupo ) to 1.9 TDi PD vRS.

Partly the success of Fabia is determined by the fact that all mechanical parts are developed by Volkswagen or in cooperation with it and are offered in a package that is cheaper than other Volkswagen Group models . The only trace left by Škoda in Fabia was the 1.4 8V “MPI” engine, which was a modification of the 1.3 Škoda engine, which was installed on Skoda Estelle and Favorit cars before starting cooperation with Volkswagen.

In 2001, a cheaper and simpler version of the Fabia Junior and a cargo-passenger Fabia Praktik appeared , made on the basis of the station wagon. In this car, the passenger compartment was separated by a partition from the cargo compartment and the rear side windows were replaced with metal panels. The length of the cargo compartment was 1578 mm, the volume - 1290 liters [6] . The sports version of the Fabia RS was released in 2003. The car was equipped with a new turbodiesel with a working volume of 1.9 liters and a capacity of 130 liters. from. Special tuning of the chassis and additional aerodynamic elements allowed it to accelerate to 206 km / h. The average fuel consumption was 5.4 liters per 100 km [7] .

2005 Skoda Fabia

In August 2004, a small modernization of the car was made [8] . The most notable changes were the new front bumper, headlights and taillights. There are new combinations of interior colors and trim levels [9] . Most importantly, a sports model with 75 liters was added. from. (55 kW) 1.4 gasoline engine and manual transmission. This engine was soon replaced by 1.2 HTP - not so powerful, but with a much wider engine speed range to give it a more sporty character. The sports specification includes red seat belts and partial tinted glass.

In 2006, the Fabia was shown at the Geneva Motor Show with slight modifications to the specification. They include a central rear head restraint, a central three-point rear seat belt and optional body colors. 1.4 16v 75 l. from. (55 kW) the gasoline engine was replaced with a more powerful 1.4 16v 80 l. from. (59 kW).

A total of 1,788,063 first-generation Skoda Fabia cars were manufactured [10] .

Rating

Journalists praised the car Skoda Fabia, he almost always won in comparison with the "classmates" tests [11] [12] [13] . Experts noted good ergonomics (comfortable fit, plenty of adjustments, convenient controls, excellent noise isolation), as well as excellent driving characteristics of the car (stability and handling, brakes).

… I am driving to Fabia with full confidence that this is the best car in its class. In terms of price / quality ratio - for sure! [fourteen]

- Mikhail Podorozhansky, Avtoreview editor-in-chief

The dynamics depended heavily on the engine, and the low-power engines used on the cheap versions were rather weak for such a car. Also criticized was the “boring”, but very well-assembled interior, cramped rear seats, a small trunk and the appearance of the car.

Fabia is like an ugly girl. You can persuade yourself as much as you want that she is smart, modest, reliable, unpretentious. And, by the way, from a very decent family [14] .

- Rustam Akiniyazov, chief editor of the journal "Autosport"

A long test (100 thousand km) of Fabia with a 1.4 MPi engine showed that it is not a problem-free car. It contained a lot of assembly flaws: poorly adjusted door locks, loose caps, loose clamps. The largest assembly defect was a poorly fixed gear shift mechanism, due to which a third gear was engaged instead of fifth gear. There were problems with the electrics, also due to poorly assembled connectors.

In general, as a city car, the Fabia turned out to be not bad - compact, maneuverable, with a high-torque “on the bottoms” engine and a sharp informative steering wheel. But the car was of little use for long-distance driving. A weak engine made it difficult to overtake, a small fuel tank limited range, a small trunk - the amount of cargo carried.

The average consumption of AI-92 gasoline over the entire duration of the test was 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers [15] .

The production of second-generation cars (internal code 5J ) began in December 2006 [20] , they were presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007 and went on sale in June [21] . Cars used the old platform, but became a bit larger in size. The author of the new body project was the famous Czech designer Frantisek Pelikan [22] .

Station wagon Skoda Fabia Combi was officially unveiled in September 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show [21] . In January 2008, cars went on sale [23] , in Russia sales began in March. Compared to the first generation, the new Fabia Combi has become longer, taller and had a larger trunk with a total volume of 480 liters [24] .

In March 2008, the production of first-generation Fabia sedans was discontinued [25] ; there are no sedans in the second-generation Fabia model range.

2010 Skoda Fabia

The model underwent a small upgrade in 2010. A new grille appeared, three-dimensional faceted headlights became wider, emphasizing the new horizontal lines of the front of the car. The range of engines has been expanded to five gasoline and three diesel. Cars received new wheels and a new range of body colors [26] .

In the same year, a little later, the new Skoda Fabia RS sports car was introduced, which was equipped with a unique gasoline engine with a double turbocharger . Due to this, the engine with a working volume of only 1.4 liters developed a capacity of 180 liters. sec., accelerating the car to a speed of 100 km / h in 7.3, and the maximum speed was 225 km / h. The car had a new front bumper, alloy wheels 17-inch design Giugiaro , painted in red brakes, as well as a rear bumper with a diffuser and dual exhaust pipes. Inside, special sports seats with the RS logo, a three-spoke steering wheel and stainless steel pedals with rubber inserts were installed [27] .

In January 2012, the Monte Carlo limited edition series dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Škoda's participation in motorsport appeared in the model line. The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo had black side moldings, a black roof and exterior mirrors, a black grille trim and shaded headlights. Alloy 16-inch wheels were also black. The cars had a black or black interior with red accents, sports seats and aluminum pedals [28] .

Station wagon Skoda Fabia Combi

In late August 2014, the production of third-generation Fabia hatchbacks began [39] , and in early October they were officially shown to the public at the Paris Motor Show [40] . In Europe, the first cars went on sale in November [39] , and in December the production of Fabia Combi station wagons [41] began .

The car is made in the new Skoda corporate identity first introduced by the concept in the spring of 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show . This emotional, “sharp” design added the sportiness of the third-generation Fabia, the new clear appearance of the crystalline form creates a unique play of light and shadow, and the elegant cut of headlights and tail lights in the Bohemian glass style complement the beautiful appearance of the car. Its proportions changed, Fabia became a little lower and grew in width [42] .

The new car offers more usable space for passengers and luggage: the passenger compartment is 8 mm longer and 21 mm wider in front at the elbow level. The hatchback has a trunk volume of 330 liters (15 liters more than on the previous generation model) and 1'150 liters with the rear seats folded, though only the back folds, forming a high step [38] . The station wagon offers the most roomy trunk in the class - 530 liters (25 liters more than the previous generation model) and 1'395 liters - with the rear seats folded, the cushion is folded first, then the back rests in its place to form a flat platform. The trunk includes items up to 1,550 mm long, the trunk width is 960 mm, and the loading height is only 611 mm [43] .

Salon Fabia

Inside, there are many places to store various things. A universal holder for multimedia devices has appeared on the center console, litter compartments can be placed in the pockets of the side doors, the nets on the inner edges of the backs of the front seats are perfect for storing small items. Both rear doors have compartments for storing half-liter bottles, a one-liter bottle will go into the glove box and two more 0.5-liter bottles can be placed in the center console.

The third-generation Fabia is the first Škoda car equipped with the MirrorLink system, which allows you to pair your smartphone with the on-board multimedia system. This makes it easy to use the navigation and music applications of the smartphone in the car. On the other hand, a car can transmit data such as fuel consumption, average speed or the cost of a trip to a special smartphone application [44] .

Skoda Fabia after 2018 update

The new engine lineup consists of four gasoline and three diesel engines. Gasoline three- and four-cylinder in-line engines are based on the new Volkswagen MQB modular concept. Three-cylinder engines 1.0 MPI with a capacity of 60 and 75 liters. from. equipped with a system for changing the valve timing of the intake valves and distributed fuel injection . Four-cylinder turbocharged engines with a working volume of 1.2 liters and a capacity of 90 and 110 liters. from. also have a variable valve timing system for intake valves, but are equipped with direct fuel injection (TSI). Two three - cylinder turbodiesels with a turbine of variable geometry and direct injection have a displacement of 1.4 liters and develop a capacity of 90 and 105 liters. from. In 2015, there will be an economical version of the Fabia GreenLine car with a 1.4-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 75 liters. from. with energy recovery system , start-stop system , tires with low rolling resistance and improved aerodynamics [30] [45] .

Engines and Transmission

Cars were equipped with a wide range of gasoline atmospheric, turbocharged and diesel engines.

MPi (Multi Point Injection) petrol engines with distributed fuel injection.

These are engines developed by Skoda before the company entered the VW concern. The atmospheric, in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine with a working volume of 1.4 liters was created on the basis of the nodes of the well-proven engine with a working volume of 1.3 liters. car Skoda Felicia . The head and engine block are made of aluminum alloy. To reduce the level of engine vibration, a cast-iron block of the crankshaft bearing caps is inserted in the lower part of the cylinder block. A three-axle crankshaft with eight counterweights, using a two-row chain, rotates the camshaft located in the ( OHV ) block, which, using pushers and rockers, drives the valves located in the block head, two per cylinder. At the bottom of the pushers is a hydraulic valve clearance compensation device . To improve engine performance, a special camshaft cam pattern is used. The full-flow lubrication system is powered by an oil pump driven by a bevel gear from the camshaft. Inside the cast-iron wet removable cylinder liners, lightweight aluminum alloy pistons move. An electromagnetic nozzle is installed in the intake manifold in front of each intake valve. Fuel to the nozzles is supplied by the fuel pump through a single fuel line, and the nozzles are turned on by signals from the control unit. The electronically controlled throttle is not mechanically connected to the gas pedal. The centrally located spark plugs are equipped with individual coils. The engine has a closed liquid cooling system, the pump and the generator are driven by a single belt. All engine operation is controlled by the Simos electronic control system ; different versions of the system made it possible to have different engine designs configured to meet certain exhaust toxicity standards .

HTP (High Torque Performance) gasoline engines with increased torque. These are in-line three-cylinder gasoline atmospheric engines with a working volume of 1.2 liters with two or four (12V) valves per cylinder. Engines have a head made of aluminum alloy and a detachable (two-part) cylinder block with wet cast iron sleeves. A four- bearing crankshaft with connecting rod journals located at an angle of 120 ° and counterweights, using a chain, drives one or two camshafts located in the head. The chain has an automatic tensioner with hydraulic drive. The camshaft cams press on the middle of the rocker arm, which at one end acts on the valve stem, and the other through the hydraulic pushers designed to maintain a constant clearance in the drive, abut against the cylinder head. The balancing (balancing) shaft, designed to damp vibrations, is attached to the crankshaft using a gear. Engines have a plastic intake manifold in which nozzles are integrated, one for each cylinder, fuel injection system . An exhaust manifold is located on the front of the engine with an exhaust gas catalytic converter built into it; oxygen sensors ( lambda probes ) are installed at the inlet and outlet of the converter. Ignition modules are installed on top of the engine, one per cylinder, combining the spark plug and ignition coil . Used proprietary engine management system Simos . Part of the air entering a separately installed air filter with a dry filter element is heated from the converter. Mixing of warm and cold air occurs automatically and is regulated by a thermostat. The engines have liquid cooling and a full-flow lubrication system under pressure.

Gasoline 16 valve ( 16V ) engines with a working volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters. In a four - cylinder in - line atmospheric engine with a displacement of 1.4 liters, the head and cylinder block are made of aluminum alloy. Cast iron wet sleeves are pressed into the cylinder block. The full-cast iron crankshaft with four counterweights, using the main gear belt, drives the cooling pump impeller and the intake camshaft located in the cylinder head. From this camshaft, a secondary toothed belt rotates gear to the exhaust camshaft. The valve drive with a gap compensation through the rocker arms is the same as that of 1.2 L engines. Electromagnetic injectors, one for each cylinder, fuel injection systems are located in a plastic intake manifold, fuel is supplied to them via a common fuel line. An air filter with a dry filter element is located on top and is integrated into the engine cover. This design can significantly reduce the noise level. At the inlet of the air filter there is a control flap with a thermostat that controls the ratio of hot and cold air. An exhaust manifold with an integrated exhaust gas converter is located on the other side of the engine. The ignition modules combining the coil and spark plug are mounted on top of the engine. The engine management system of Magneti Marelli is used . The full-flow lubrication system uses a compact and silent internal gear gear oil pump located at the end of the crankshaft. A closed liquid cooling system with a thermostat and an expansion tank is used.

Gasoline turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection , TSI (Turbocharged Stratified Injection). The in-line four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.4 l (1.4 TSI) has two camshafts in the aluminum head of the cylinder block, which lead through the rocker arms with hydraulic compensators V-shaped valves, four per cylinder. The intake camshaft has a smooth adjustment of the angular position . Rotation to the camshafts is transmitted from the crankshaft using a maintenance-free chain. The forged steel full support crankshaft is located in the cast iron cylinder block. Aluminum pistons have special recesses in the bottoms providing a swirl of incoming air and a special anti-friction graphite coating of the skirt.

Exhaust fumes spin a turbine that rotates a compressor that supplies compressed air to the engine cylinders. The turbine has a damper controlling the incoming gases, with the help of which its revolutions, compressor revolutions and, accordingly, boost pressure are changed. The maximum boost pressure is 1.8 bar. The air compressed by the turbocompressor passes through a liquid cooler ( intercooler ) of a separate cooling system with its own radiator and an electric pump. The plastic intake manifold also has a specially shaped channel for air swirling. Gasoline is supplied to the engine by means of an electric fuel pump and a single-cylinder high-pressure fuel pump (TNVD) driven from the intake camshaft. Six-hole injectors deliver fuel to the cylinders at a pressure of 60 bar, have an optimized spray pattern and dual-injection mode. Diesel atmospheric SDI (Suction Diesel Injection) and turbocharged TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) engines.

Chassis

The cars are equipped with rack and pinion steering with power steering manufactured by TRW . The power steering pump is driven by a separate electric motor, which saves energy, since the pump is turned on only when necessary. In addition, the performance of the hydraulic pump does not depend on the engine speed of the car, which is very important when parking, when the steering wheel effort is maximum, and the engine runs at low speed. An electronic control system monitors the speed of the car, engine speed, steering angle and in a certain way changes the performance of the hydraulic pump. Так обеспечивается изменяемое в зависимости от условий движения усилие на рулевом колесе. Рулевая колонка регулируется в двух направлениях: по углу наклона и вылету.
