Story
Professor Zavalishin, a major scientist, Doctor of Technical Sciences, author of a huge number of scientific works and an excellent teacher, was for many years the head of the Department of Cybernetics at the institute. After the death of Zavalishin, Professor Flyagin was appointed in his place, lacking stars from the sky as a scientist, but an ardent champion of order and discipline. The new head sincerely wants to improve the work of the department. However, he is devoid of the gift of leading people, loving them. Using methods more suitable for the army barracks, Flyagin receives the insulting nickname “ Arakcheev ” from his subordinates, and engages in open conflict with one of them, associate professor Spivak. Realizing his inability to be the head of the scientific team, Flyagin resigns from his post, despite the fact that most of the department staff are not against his leadership.
At the same time, associate professor Nina Ignatyevna Astashova irreconcilably struggling with pseudo-scientists who are unworthy of becoming on the same level as Zavalishin, Spivak and other distinguished employees of the institute, but openly and without hesitation climb into a warm place. In particular, while defending her doctoral dissertation, an associate professor at the adjacent department of Yakovkin, she is not embarrassed to openly accuse the dissertation of plagiarism (using the results obtained by his subordinates, without reference to the authors), as well as using mutually exclusive assumptions to build a model.
Parsing Zavalishin’s papers remaining after his death, Astashova discovers that in recent years, the professor, who had a hard time surviving the death of his beloved wife, withdrew from scientific activity and did not create anything significant. To support his good name in the scientific community, Astashova includes his own work under his name in the posthumous collection of works of the professor.
