Brigid

Brigidki ( Polish Brygidki , Ukrainian brigidki ) - the oldest active prison in Lviv ( Ukraine ). It is located on Gorodotskaya Street , 20 in a building rebuilt from the old Roman Catholic monastery of the Order of the Holy Brigida . The monastery was built in 1614 at the initiative and at the expense of Anna Fastkovskaya and Anna Poradovskaya for girls from noble families. In the courtyard was built the church-chapel of St. Peter the Apostle with a baroque altar. In a slightly modified form, the church building still exists.

In 1784, at the initiative of the Austrian authorities , who replaced the Polish administration in Galicia and pursued a policy of secularization , the monastery was closed and its building turned into a prison.

The prison continued to operate during the Polish and Soviet period. In June 1941, during the retreat of the Red Army at the beginning of the war with Germany, in Brigidki, as in other prisons in Lviv and Lviv region, there were massive executions of political prisoners by the NKVD [1] [2] . During the German occupation of Lviv in Brigidki, mass executions were also held. , so in July 1941, dozens of representatives of the Polish intelligentsia of Lviv were killed, and later mass killings of Jews took place here [3] .

Now the building is located Lviv remand center No. 19 .

Until the end of the 1980s, death sentences were carried out in pre-trial detention centers [4] .

In 2008, the question of moving the Lviv pre-trial detention center outside the city in connection with the preparations for the 2012 European Football Championship was considered [5] .

In 2009, the former head of the Lviv pre-trial detention center No. 19 was convicted of ill-treatment of prisoners [6] .
