Irish National University - Union of Universities of Ireland . It consists of 4 founding universities and 5 colleges and is Ireland's largest university. The Union was founded in 1908 by the Irish Universities Act, in place of the Queen's University of Ireland , which has been in force since 1880, and in 1997 was substantially amended by the Universities Act. The founders of the universities on all major issues are independent of each other, with the exception of degrees and diplomas that are issued on behalf of a national university with headquarters in Dublin.
