Biography

Surf graduated from high school in Los Angeles , entered Stanford University , where he received a bachelor 's degree in mathematics in 1965 . After graduating , Surf went to work at IBM , where he helped develop the QUIKTRAN programming language . However, two years later he left the company and returned to the university, enrolling at the University of California at Los Angeles . There he received a master's degree and ( 1972 ) a doctorate in computer science. During his studies, Cerf worked under the guidance of Professor Leonard Kleinrock , who is known for implementing the university's connection to ARPANET , the predecessor of the Internet . There he met Robert Kahn . After studying, Surf worked as an assistant professor at Stanford University and worked there for four years.

From 1976 to 1982, Vinton Cerf worked for the United States Agency for Advanced Defense Research ( DARPA ). After that, he worked for four years at MCI Inc. and then at the Corporation for National Research Initiatives ( CNRI ) until January 1994.

In 1997, Surf, suffering from reduced hearing [3] , became one of the leaders of the Gallaudet University - a state university for training deaf and hearing-impaired people.

From 1999 to 2007, he led the ICANN organization leadership.

Since September 2005, Vinton Cerf has been the vice president and the “main preacher of the Internet” (“supreme apostle”) at Google [4] (not available link) .

In 2008, Dr. Cerf led the IETF committee on the development and implementation of internationalized domain names .

Surf is co-chair of Campus Party Silicon Valley, the American edition of one of the largest technology festivals in the world, along with Al Gore and Tim Berners-Lee. From 2009-2011 Surf was elected a member of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) governing board. SGIP is a public-private consortium created by NIST in 2009 and provides a forum for enterprises and other interested groups to participate in coordinating and accelerating the development of standards for the evolving Smart Grid. Surf was elected for a two-year term as president of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) from July 1, 2012.

January 16, 2013, US President Barack Obama announced his intention to appoint Dr. Cerf to the key post of administration of the National Science Council [5] . Surf is also among the 15 members of the board of governors of the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad.
