Biography
Born February 21, 1925 in Kiev in a Jewish family. He studied with the famous music teacher D. Pisarevsky. In 1941 he graduated from the music school at the Kiev Conservatory in composition (I sat at the same desk with Jan Frenkel [1] ). He studied with famous musicians Arseniy Yankelevich , Abram Luffer , Matvey Gosenpud . From the beginning of the war he was evacuated in Ufa , where he entered the medical institute. In May 1942, he volunteered for the front. He participated in the battles on the Voronezh, 1st Ukrainian Front .
As a military paramedic, he traveled from Stalingrad to Berlin. Was injured. I met the victory as a lieutenant of the medical service.
After the war, in 1946 he entered the Pyotr Tchaikovsky KGC , which he graduated with honors in 1951. He studied in the composition class with Lev Revutsky and Boris Lyatoshinsky . While still a student, he was admitted to the Union of Composers of Ukraine (1948). Subsequently, he made a great contribution to various musical genres, especially the song.
Passed away on August 17, 1982 [2] . He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery [3] .
Creativity
Chamo is the author of more than three hundred songs, including the Kiev anthem - “My Mine”, the author of orchestral compositions (three symphonies), quartets and choirs to the words of Ivan Franko , versatile chamber-vocal cycles to poems by Robert Burns , Andrei Malyshko , ten romances on verses by Taras Shevchenko , piano music, suites “Ukrainian”, “Classical”, “Hutsul watercolors”, “Taras dum”, cantata “Ukraine sings” (to the verses of Dmitry Lutsenko ), ten concert pieces for bandura. Among the chamber works of the composer, the choral opera Yatran Games occupies a special place.
Igor Shamo is the author of music for more than forty films, including such popular ones as “The Sea Calls”, “Malva”, “Burn, My Star”, “ Forest Song ”, “Elena Bay”, “Trap”. More than forty theatrical performances are staged by Shamo’s music, including the tragedy of Karl Gutskov “Uriel Acosta”. For many years, friendship and joint work connected Igor Shamo and the People's Artist of Ukraine, virtuoso musician, professor of the NMAU Vladimir Besfamilinov , who performed for the first time a concert for the button accordion and symphony orchestra triumphantly sounded.
The composer made a special contribution to the song genre. Among the lyric songs are famous “Autumn Gold”, “Three Tips”, “Enchanted Desna”, “Song about the Silver Swan”, “Oh, pour a wreath”, “Ukraine is my love” and others. The cycle of songs is dedicated to the composer's hometown - “Kiev native”, “Only in Kiev”, “Dnieper Waltz”, and the most important song of the cycle is the song “ Yak you do not like, Kiev my! "( Rus. How not to love you, my Kiev! ) To the words of Dmitry Lutsenko , who became the anthem of the capital of Ukraine. A fragment of the song’s melody sounds on the chimes of the central square of Kiev.
The Great Patriotic War occupies a significant place in the work of the composer. He wrote the ballads “The Immortal Garrison”, “The Kurgan stands over the Volga”, “The Ballad of the Soldiers”, “Front-line soldiers”, “The Ballad of the Brotherhood”, “Heroes of the City”, “Remember Friends”. Music and songs about the war are heard in theatrical performances - “Diary Page”, “Blue Deers” and films - “ They Only Knew By Their Face ”, “ Far from the Homeland ”, “The Night Before Dawn”, “ From the Bug to the Vistula ”, “ The Duma of Kovpak ”,“ Ship Commander ”,“ Missiles Should Not Take Off ”and many others.

- To the 75th anniversary of the composer (January 26, 2000) a mail envelope has been issued
- At the house number 8 on Kostelnaya street in Kiev, where Igor Shamo lived and worked from 1968 to 1982, a memorial plaque with a bas-relief was opened on February 21, 1995 (sculptor Valery Medvedev )
- Kiev Music School No. 7 ( Chokolovsky Boulevard , 25) bears the name of Igor Shamo
- In September 2015, the Kyiv City State Administration held a public discussion about renaming Alexey Davydov Boulevard to Igor Shamo Boulevard. Most Kievans (160 versus 59) supported this renaming [5] .
