Heavy Armament Fighting Vehicle (BMTV) is a class of armored combat vehicles designed to combat enemy armored vehicles, support infantry on the battlefield, and reconnaissance.

The term (phrase) first appeared in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe and was defined as “an armored fighting vehicle with an integrated or standard gun of at least 75 mm caliber for direct fire, with a dry weight of at least 6.0 metric tons, which is not it falls under the definition of an armored personnel carrier , infantry fighting vehicle or battle tank . ” The text of the contract in English uses the phrase (term) heavy armed combat vehicle ("heavy armament combat vehicle" (HACV)).

When signing the contract in 1990, the following were classified as BMTV:

  • armored cars :
    • French AMX-10RC , ERC-90 , EBR-75 "Panhard" ,
    • Spanish BMR-625-90,
    • American "Commando" V150 ,
    • British Saladin
  • light tanks
    • British Scorpio
    • american m24

    • Soviet PT-76
Heavy armament fighting vehicle M1128 MGS
  • self-propelled artillery
    • Soviet SU-76 , SU-100 , ISU-152

Subsequently, new models of military equipment appeared that fell under the definition of BMW: American M1128 MGS [1] , Italian Centauro [2] , Japanese MCV [3] [4] [5] .

Compared with the main tanks, the BMTVs have a lower mass, greater maneuverability, greater operational mobility (including due to air transport), however, they have less durable reservations.

Classification ambiguity

BMTVs are also called fire support combat vehicles [6] , highly mobile wheeled tank destroyers [7] , armored vehicles [7] , and combat reconnaissance vehicles [8] . The last two phrases also apply to military vehicles with less powerful weapons. Caterpillar vehicles that fall under the definition of BMTV are usually called light tanks [9] .

Adopted by the Russian Armed Forces, the 2C25 Octopus-SD tracked vehicle is officially classified as a self-propelled anti-tank gun [10] .
