Biography
He studied at the Prague Academy of Arts under Christian Ruben . In the 1840s he painted large canvases on subjects from Czech history, especially from the era of the Hussite wars . Illustrated the "Book of Songs" by Heinrich Heine . Since 1852 he worked in Vienna , then for five years he lived in Rome . Upon his return to Vienna in 1861, he turned mainly to religious subjects, but did not leave a historical theme: his large canvases “ Leopold the Glorious enters Vienna after returning from the Crusade” ( 1872 ), “Thomas Münzer”, “King Enzo” and etc. In addition, Trenkwald worked a lot with frescoes in Vienna and Prague churches.
In 1867–73 - Director of the Prague Academy of Arts , then taught at the Vienna Academy of Arts . Among his famous students is Bogumir Roubalik .
