Biography
In 1797, at the age of ten, he became a student of Francois Devenne and Johann Georg Wunderlich at the Paris Conservatory . In those days, every flutist who wanted to graduate from the conservatory had to win the first prize at the annual flute contest, and Guillau won it in 1805.
From 1816, Guillau was a court musician of King Louis XVIII , and from 1822 to 1826 he was a soloist of the Grand Opera Orchestra.
From 1819 to 1829 Guillau is a professor at the Paris Conservatory. Among his students is Louis Dorius .
Guillau was a very wealthy man, however, some significant financial problems arose in his life, and by the end of the 1820s Guillau lost all his fortune.
From 1829, he was forced to actively tour Europe and, ultimately, from 1831 he settled in St. Petersburg forever.
Creative activity
The author of virtuoso pieces for flute, concert and a number of pieces for flute, he wrote the libretto of the opera Bianca and Gualtiero by composer A. F. Lvov ( 1843 , production 1844 , Dresden ).
He participated in the creation of the world's first quintet of woodwind instruments. It is possible that the quintet included, in addition to Guillau, oboe player Gustave Vogt , clarinet player Jacques Jules Bouffil , bassoon player Antoine Henri and French horn player Louis Francois Dopra .
In St. Petersburg in 1846 - 1848 Guillau published the magazine L'artiste Russe, who wrote in French about Russian musicians. In it, along with articles, he printed his own engravings [1] from paintings and portraits of I.K. Aivazovsky , F.A. Bruni , A.E. Egorov and others. Guillau played in the orchestras of the St. Petersburg imperial theaters (the first flutist), He acted as a critic in the press, was a lecturer, gave private lessons.
