Correctional houses are houses for the maintenance of beggars and criminals in conditions of heavy physical work.
Mass begging , which did not succumb to the most brutal self-injurious punishments, led to the establishment of the first correctional houses in Europe . A similar house - House of correction was built in London in 1550 ; then in 1588 in Amsterdam and a special house for the placement of poor children in Nuremberg ; in 1613 - in Lübeck , in 1615 - in Hamburg and in 1682 in Munich .
There were, however, not only tramps , beggars , various kinds of criminals , but also workers and servants for laziness and daring behavior. As a result, the correctional houses soon overflowed and turned into centers of debauchery and contagious diseases (prison typhus ). [one]
