National Park in Thailand ( Thai. อุทยานแห่งชาติ ทาง บก ) is an area of at least ten square kilometers containing natural resources of ecological importance or unique beauty, or especially important flora and fauna . Thailand currently has 102 national parks (including 21 Marine National Parks , Thai. อุทยานแห่งชาติ ทาง ทะเล ). Often forest parks ( Thai วนอุทยาน ใน ) are mistakenly called national parks, although they are less protected and managed by the local administration.
National Parks are managed by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants (DNP), which is part of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (MONRE). The Department was recently established in 2002, and took over the management of national parks at the Royal Forest Department of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The first Khao Yai National Park was established in 1961, after the adoption of the National Park Act ( National Park Act BE 2504 ). The first marine park, Hao Sam Roy Yot, was created in 1966. In 1993, the administration of national parks was divided into two departments: land and, separately, marine parks.
The controversy over Thailand's national parks contains major topics: overdevelopment and private concessions. Koh Samet and other national parks located on the islands, partially turned out to be in private hands, especially in the form of excessive building up with objects such as bungalows . In addition, many of the northern parks are heavily used for illegal “ fire farming ” and for poaching.
In the process of creation there are 33 national and three marine parks, and soon they will be formed and officially presented.
