Biography

Born under the White Church ( Kiev province ), studied acting at the White Church studio “Kiidramte”. Since 1927 he was an actor of the Kharkov Theater of Small Forms “The Joyful Proletarian” , at the same time he began working as a director and moved to Odessa (1930). Later he moved to Kiev with his family, and then to Moscow.

In 1941, Hanan Moiseevich Shmain volunteered for the front, was captured by the Germans, miraculously escaped, his family was in dire poverty [1] .

After the war, Mosfilm shot two films at the film studio: Dangerous Rail (1952) and Hypnosis Session (1953). In 1957-1969 he worked as a director at the Tsentrnauchfilm film studio.

In the book “Les Kurbas. Memoirs of Contemporaries ”(Kiev: Art, 1969) included the memoirs of Kh. M. Shmain“ Director, teacher, scientist. ”

Creativity

Director of several comedy films, including One Day in the Summer (scripted by Ilf and Petrov ) and The Hypnosis Session. He worked with the film studios Ukrainfilm (Kiev) and Mosfilm (1953). The staging work of H. Shmain in the film “Once in the Summer” was highly appreciated by I. Ilyinsky , who played two main roles in it - the swindler of the pseudo-professor Saint-Verbud and the chairman of the automobile club, nicknamed “Telescope” [2] :

Hanan Moiseevich was truly enthusiastic about his work - after all, the technical capabilities we had at that time were very modest and limited. In the film, there were supposed to be car races, a car explosion, a collapsing bridge, however, he successfully coped with both the filming and the editing. The film was praised by Ilf and Petrov, who were the authors of the script
