Biography

Anatoly Kalinin was born on November 21, 1939 in the ancient Russian city of Shuya . In childhood, he became interested in solving and creating puzzles, which were published on the pages of children's magazines. He graduated from school in Shuya, after which he graduated from MIREA (Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering of Electronics and Automation). He works as an engineer in the computing center of the SSC of the Russian Federation. Then, he heads the computer center TsNIIEP dwellings , where he works until the end of his professional career.

In the mid-1970s, he began to create puzzles. At that time in the Soviet Union no one was engaged in puzzles at a serious level, for the entire existence of patent law in the USSR, Anatoly Kalinin was the second person to submit an application for the invention of a puzzle toy and to receive an author's certificate. The puzzle consisted of intertwined rings, and its goal was to find the only key ring, unhooking which, it was possible to free all the rings. The task had a unique solution. Developing this topic, Kalinin writes and publishes his first article “This amazing ligature of rings ...”, published by the physical and mathematical journal for schoolchildren “ Quantum ”. This is followed by a series of publications devoted to puzzles in the journals Science and Life , Young Technician , Family and School , Mathematics at School , and Culture and Sobriety .

In the late 1980s and early 1990s in Leningrad, Vladimir Nikolaevich Belov organized the publication of three books on puzzles: “A game? Game! ”,“ In the labyrinths of games and puzzles ”and“ Kaleidoscope of puzzles ”, in the writing of which Anatoly Timofeevich participated. With a colleague in the Quantum magazine, V. N. Dubrovsky, Kalinin wrote the book “Mathematical Puzzles”, and in 1990 its first part was published: “Before and After the Rubik's Cube”. The publication of the second part - “The Rubik's Cube Family” - was prevented by perestroika.

Anatoly Kalinin in 1993 became one of the founders of the first Russian club of puzzle lovers [1] . The club exists to this day and is engaged in the popularization of puzzles, their history and role in the development of society. The club publishes the quarterly newsletter "Charada", sent by e-mail, and maintains its website on the Internet, where you can find information about both puzzles and the activities of the club. In 2000, Anatoly Timofeevich retired and devoted himself entirely to writing books. For several years, Anatoly Kalinin has been researching and collecting vessels with secrets . The result of this work was the book "Russian and foreign vessels with secrets." The author of the book published his work under a free license, authorizing any use of the book materials for free publications. Anatoly Kalinin has collected the world's largest collection of Russian vessels with secrets, now it is transferred to the Museum of Local Lore in the city of Shui, Ivanovo Region.

In 2011, the book of Anatoly Kalinin, “Vision of Secrets. Mysterious paintings in the past and present. " This is the first book in Russian, dedicated not only to foreign, but also to Russian paintings and objects with secrets in world art. It tells about visual riddles hidden by artists in paintings, engravings and drawings. This genre has existed in world art for several centuries. The book contains more than 500 paintings and objects. “Deceptive” art is an attractive genre of painting for artists, but difficult for artists, requiring sophisticated mental work from both. Mysterious images are difficult to find in museums and art galleries, they remain a little-known part of the visual arts, which was one of the main reasons for writing the book.

Anatoly Timofeevich continues to develop and create puzzles. For annual meetings and congresses of puzzle lovers at the international, all-Russian and other levels, Anatoly Timofeevich creates various puzzles, often with his own hands and from improvised materials.
