Laverov, Nikolai Pavlovich

Born into a peasant family in the village of Pozharishche (now Klimovskoye rural settlement ) of the Northern Territory . In 1938-1945 he studied at Klimovskaya secondary school with seven classes of education ^[3] . He entered the Kirov Mining and Chemical College , which he graduated with honors in 1947, having received the specialty of a mining geologist. Then he studied at the Moscow Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold named after M. I. Kalinin at the Department of Geology, Searches and Exploration of Deposits of Radioactive and Rare Elements of the Special Exploration Department ^[4] . He graduated with honors in December 1954, receiving the qualification of a mining geological engineer.

From 1955 to 1958 he was a graduate student of the special department of Tsvetmetzoloto, while working as an assistant there. In 1958 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences on the topic "Geology and genesis of ores of the Kurdai uranium deposit (South Kazakhstan)" ^[4] .

From 1958 to 1966 he worked as a scientific secretary and then director of the Central Asian Geological Station of the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IGEM), and studied deposits of radioactive materials.

In 1966 he was transferred to the Ministry of Geology of the USSR , to the post of deputy head of the Office of research organizations, oversaw the country's geological institutes. From 1968 to 1972 led the All-Union Geological Fund of the USSR (VGF), where, on his initiative, the system of accounting for explored mineral reserves and the structure of the state balance of mineral reserves were improved ^[4] .

In 1972 he was appointed head of the Office of Research Organizations of the USSR Ministry of Geology, which he headed until 1983.

Simultaneously with his work at the USSR Ministry of Geology, he headed the laboratory at IGEM in 1966-1983, studied the conditions for the formation of uranium deposits.

In January 1973 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Geology and conditions for the formation of uranium deposits in continental paleovolcanic regions." In 1976 he was awarded the academic title of professor.

On March 15, 1979, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry (specialty mining , mining of solid minerals ). Elected academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences from December 23, 1987 in the Department of Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining Sciences (specialty geology of ore deposits).

On October 20, 1988, he was elected vice president of the USSR Academy of Sciences, headed the Section of Earth Sciences of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences (from December 1991 to 2013 - vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences) ^[4] .

From July 1987 to March 1989 - President of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR .

From 1989 to 1991 , Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR . In 1990-1991 he was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU .

July 17, 1989 he was appointed Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology ^[5] .

From January 15 to August 28, 1991 - Deputy Prime Minister of the USSR ^[6] . Simultaneously, from May 16 of the same year, Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology ^[7] - Minister of the USSR ^[8] . After the resignation of the Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR in August 1991, he worked in the status of and. about. Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology until November 26, 1991, when he was relieved of his duties by special decree of the President of the USSR ^[9] .

Since 2000 - Head of the Department of International Affairs of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the International Institute for Energy Policy and Diplomacy, MGIMO .

USSR Master of Sports in Sambo, member of the Board of Trustees of the All-Russian Sambo Federation ^[10] .

In 1988-1989, he headed the scientific group of the government Commission of the USSR to eliminate the consequences of the Spitak earthquake (Armenia). He chaired the Permanent Commission for the Study of the Arctic (since 1989), headed the Scientific Council of the State Scientific and Technical Program "Global Changes in the Natural Environment and Climate" (since 1990), and since October 1993, he chaired the Commission under the Government of the Russian Federation for Geological ensuring the safe disposal of radioactive waste. Since 1996, he chaired the Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the scientific fleet and Earth exploration from space , was a member of the Supervisory Board of the International Luxembourg Forum for the Prevention of Nuclear Disaster ^[11] .

Since 1991, he headed the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IGEM RAS), and in recent years has been its scientific adviser. ^[12]

He died on Sunday, November 27, 2016 ^[14] after a serious illness. He was buried on November 30 at the Novodevichy cemetery . ^{[15] [16]}

N. P. Laverov is the author and co-author of more than 700 scientific papers, including 28 monographs ^[29] . His works played a large role in creating new technologies for the development and development of the resource base of the country's nuclear and other mineral raw materials industries.

In 1966-1983 was the chief editor of the journal "Soviet Geology".

He was the chairman of the editorial board of the series "Scientific and bibliographic literature."
