Biography
Appointed in 1844 as the Minister of the Interior of Saxony, he instituted a rather general antipathy with his reactionary encroachments; however, in 1847, he worked out a law on the press, which somewhat improved its position.
The revolution of 1848-1849 in Germany forced him to retire to private life.
In 1850, he was appointed president of the consistory, in 1853, minister of cults and education. With it, the content of national teachers was significantly improved, many new gymnasiums and teachers' seminaries were founded, the auxiliary educational facilities of the University of Leipzig (laboratories, institutes, etc.) were improved, and several major scientists were invited, so that it took the first place among German universities .
In 1866 , after the end of the Austro-Prussian War, Falkenstein became president of the cabinet. In 1868 they transformed the church administration in Saxony: the election of church elders ( German: Kirchenvorstände ) was granted to the parishioners. In 1871, Falkenstein assumed the quieter post of minister to the royal court.
I wrote a biography based on King Johann’s handwritten notes and my own memories: “Johann, König von Sachsen. Ein Lebensbild ”(Dresd., 1878). See Petzholdt, "Johann-Paul-Freiherr von Falkenstein" (Dresden, 1882).
