Known mainly for his work on the anatomy and morphology of plants (Vergleichende Untersuchungen der Vegetationsorgane der Monocotyledonen, Stuttgart, 1876) and on algae. Falkenberg put a lot of work into the study of the vast and most difficult group of red algae Rhodomelaceae ("Rhodomelaceae" in the book of Engler and Prantl "Natural system of plant families" ("Pflanzenfamilien"), Lp., 1897).
