Career
In clubs
Pupil of the Sumy football school "Spartak" (since 1962). At a young age, he played for the Spartak Sumy (1965-1969), Voroshilovgrad Zarya (1970-1971) teams.
Dynamo came to Kiev before the start of the 1972 season, in which Zarya became the USSR champion , ahead of Dynamo, the silver medalist. In his new team, Fomenko took the place of a free defender, with each game achieving an ever better understanding with partners. Champion and winner of the USSR Cup 1974, champion of 1975, winner of the Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Champion of the USSR in 1977, winner of the USSR Cup 1978.
Team
In 1972, Fomenko made his debut in the USSR team . This happened on July 16 at the stadium of the Finnish city of Vasa . He participated in the qualifying games of the World and European Championships, the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. At the European Championship matches with the national teams of Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, a friendly match with the Hungarian national team in Budapest, Mikhail Fomenko led the USSR national team as captain. In 1975 he was a captain in Dynamo. In total, the USSR team played 24 matches (including 5 matches for the USSR Olympic team ).
Feature
A tall, very agile and bold central defender, was the full owner of the penalty area. Cold-blooded and reliable, he was strong in positional play, cemented the defense of the team. He strictly respected game discipline, was useful in connecting to attacks, played well with his head. .
Coaching career
He ended his playing career at the age of 30 due to a troubling back injury. After that, he studied at the Higher School of Trainers for two years, received a diploma and started coaching.

After the collapse of the USSR, the head coach of clubs and national teams: Dynamo Kiev (1992-1993), Veres Rivne (1994), Guinea national team (1994), CSKA-Borisfen Kiev (1994-1996), Metalist Kharkiv ( 1996-2000, 2001-2002, 2003), CSKA Kiev (2000-2001), Metallurg Zaporozhye (2003), Tavria Simferopol (2006-2008), Salute Belgorod (2010-2011).
He considers his work in the Guria club to be the most revealing, with which he entered the major league of the USSR football championship in 1989 (although in 1990 Georgian clubs left the allied football tournaments and Fomenko was unable to continue working with the club).
December 26, 2012 was appointed head coach of the national team of Ukraine , signing a contract according to the 1 + 2 scheme [1] . The coaching debut in the national team came in a friendly match with Norway, which took place on February 6, 2013, in which the Ukrainian team won 2-0. The team under his leadership entered the European Championship in 2016, where he lost all three matches, after which Fomenko left the national team.
