History

Ore loading dock at Whyalla Port

Whyalla’s story is inextricably linked with the history of Australian mining giant BHP Billiton . Whyalla emerged in 1901 as a port for transporting iron ore through Spencer Bay. The ore came here via a narrow gauge railway from the mines of this company in the Middleback mountains and was transported by ships to the other side of the bay, in Port Piri , where it was used as a flux in the process of smelting lead . Whyalla became a city in 1920 ; the port grew, and iron ore began to be transported by sea to steel mills in Newcastle , in the east of the country.

View of the city

Whyalla herself became a big industry city in 1939 , when the construction of the first blast furnace and shipyard began. By 1965 there was already a whole metallurgical plant. And the shipyard built many ships for the defense of the country in World War II, and became the largest in Australia [1] .

Since there is almost no fresh water here, a main water supply from the Murray River was built.

By 1976 , the population of the city reached 33 thousand people. But soon the shipyard closed, unable to withstand competition with Japan (1978), and the metallurgical industry gradually began to decline.

At the beginning of the 21st century, things in the mining industry of South Australia went uphill again, which had a positive effect on industrial activity in Whyalla.

Whyalla Corvette, now installed on land in the city of the same name

Whyalla Corvette ( HMAS Whyalla ) - the first ship launched at the Whyalla Shipyard, and named after this city, was in 1984, after its decommissioning, bought by the Whyalla City Council for 5,000 Australian dollars, returned to its hometown, and in 1987, installed on land 2 km from the coast. It became the center of the city Maritime Museum, opened on October 29, 1988.

False Bay, located to the north-east of Whyall, is known as False Bay, where giant cuttlefish gather every winter (southern hemisphere) during their mating season [2] [3] [4] . Allegedly, in view of the relatively small depth, cuttlefish can be observed not only with scuba gear , but even with snorkel [3] .
