Geographical position
The province is located in the mountains in the north - west of the country, along the border with Myanmar . The province is landlocked, bordered by the Thai provinces of Chiang Mai and Tak , as well as the Burmese states of Shan , Karen and Kai .
The territory of the province is a mountainous area, often covered with impassable virgin forests , with deep river valleys, often difficult to reach. It is in the valleys and most of the population is concentrated.

Population
63 % of the population are national minorities ( “ Mountain tribes ” ): Karen , Shan , Kaya , Hmong , Yao , Lakhu , Lisa , Akha, and others.
Administrative division
Mae Hong Son Province is administratively divided into 7 districts ( Amphe ), which, in turn, are subdivided into 45 rural districts ( Tambons ) and 402 villages ( Mubana ):

Transportation
The large population centers are connected to the rest of Thailand by roads , some of which are dangerous in the mountains. There is a small airport near Mae Hong Son.
