The Olympic team was created specifically for participation in the Olympic Games (OI), according to the decision of FIFA adopted after the 58th World Cup , which forbade players who played in the final part of the World Championship to participate in the OI (this rule applied only to UEFA and CONMEBOL zones). Prior to this decision, the first (main) USSR team (OI-52 and OI-56) played in football tournaments.

In total, the USSR Olympic team has 69 official matches: + 46 = 15-8, goals 141-47.

In addition to official matches, the USSR Olympic team participated in various international tournaments (for example, in the J. Nehru Golden Cup ) and numerous friendly matches.

XVII Summer Olympics in Rome 1960

Tournament Preparation

Group 3

In order to defend their Olympic title at the games in Rome , the USSR national team had to go through a screening screen. According to the territorial principle, she got into the 3rd European group together with the teams of Bulgaria and Romania. This time it was decided to create a separate team from the main Olympic team, which included the players from the closest reserve of the main team. Of the players who participated in the qualifying games, only goalkeeper Boris Razinsky represented the team that won the Melbourne gold. The trainer was appointed Boris Arkadyev . The coaching council also included M. I. Yakushin and A. S. Ponomarev .

The calendar of games was compiled in such a way that the USSR national team took part in all the first four games, and the national teams of Bulgaria and Romania had to fight among themselves.

The 18th Summer Olympics in Tokyo 1964

Tournament Preparation

As a result of the draw, the USSR national team fell into the third European group of the qualifying tournament for the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo . The country was represented by the Olympic, but in fact, the second team: the players of the first team ( Glotov , Korneev , Mudrik ) played together with the players of the closest reserve ( Anibkin , Lobanovsky , Urushadze ) and the deepest reserve ( Biba , Sevidov , Fadeev ) of the main team. There were no age restrictions for players, for example, goalkeeper Kotrikadze at the time of the first meeting with the Finns was incomplete 27 years old. The team was headed by Vyacheslav Solovyov , who combined this post with similar work in CSKA. Assistant - E.I. Lyadin .

The tournament regulations did not provide for a group round robin tournament. The teams had to hold two-match meetings for the relegation. In the preliminary round, the GDR team knocked out another national team from western Germany. At the next stage, they had to fight with the Dutch , and the USSR team disputed the exit to the next round in the confrontation with Finland.

Having taken 1st place in its qualifying group, the USSR Olympic team won the right to perform in Los Angeles, where, according to the draw, it ended up in Group D with teams from the USA, Costa Rica and Egypt. But the team did not go to the Olympics because of the boycott announced by the Soviet sports authorities. Refused to participate in the Olympics and almost all the socialist countries, among which were both Hungary and Bulgaria. Thus, none of the teams that played in our qualifying group went to the football tournament of the XXIII Olympic Games. And in group D of the final tournament of the games, instead of our team, the Italian Olympic team played.

XXIV Summer Olympics in Seoul 1988

Since 1984, the IOC and FIFA have decided to participate in the Olympic Games of young players under the age of 21; it was allowed to include up to 5 players older than the specified age in the teams participating in the Olympics.
