The son of the painter Joseph Israels , one of the most respected artists of the Hague School , and Aleida Shaap. Israel's artistic talent manifested itself in early childhood. In the years 1880-1882 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, where he met with George Hendrick Breitner , who became his lifelong friend.
In 1881, when Israel was 16, he sold the first painting, “Bugle Practice,” even before it was finished, to artist and collector Hendrik Willem Mesdach . Since 1878, together with his father, he made annual visits to the Paris Salon , where he made his debut in 1882. Since 1886 he lived in Amsterdam, where he attended the Royal Academy of Visual Arts to complete his studies.
He was influenced by French impressionism. The author of portraits, scenes of urban life portrayed people from the people - workers, soldiers, sailors. Famous paintings by the painter: “ Riding a donkey along the beach ”, “ Two girls in the snow ”, “ Showcase ”.
