Jean-Pierre Beltoise was again absent from the start due to a temporary suspension of his license caused by an investigation into a racing accident in Buenos Aires, which killed Ignazio Giunti. Vic Alford took the place of the deceased Pedro Rodriguez in the BRM, the third pilot Mario Andretti returned to the Ferrari. Helmut Marko was supposed to make his debut in the championship behind the wheel of a private McLaren, but his car stalled in qualification on the very first lap due to running out of fuel. The holder of the pole Jackie Stewart led throughout the race and won a third consecutive and fifth victory of the season. Mike BΓΆttler was disqualified for a wrong pit lane race.
