The origins of the river are in the state of Shan in Myanmar. In Northern Thailand, Kok flows through the provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai , where it flows into the Mekong .

Of the major cities on the river is Chiang Rai , which, according to legend , was founded in 1262 at the place where Mengrai the Great found his escaped elephant .

In episode 7 of season 21 of the Top Gear show, her presenters built a bridge over the Kok River.
