He soon founded the city of Chiang Rai . According to legend, this happened in 1262 on the banks of the Kok River at the place where Mengrai found an escaped elephant [1] .

In 1296 (according to another version - in 1291 ) [2] he founded the city of Chiang Mai , from which the history of the state of Lanna began , ruled by the Mengrai dynasty until 1558 , and nominally until 1578 [3] [4] .
In 1317, Mengrai, according to legend, died from a lightning strike when he was on the city market.
