History
The first settlements on the site of modern Limerick arose 3 thousand years ago. In the V century , several monastery complexes were built in this area. In the IX century , the Vikings came here and in 812 founded a colony , which later became the city of Limerick. In 977 , after the death of the Vikings leader Ivar, King of Munster Brian Boru included the city in his sphere of influence.
In 1173, Limerick submitted to the Normans who had invaded England. True, before this, the last Irish ruler of Limerick burned down the city, and the Normans had to rebuild Limerick again.
After the battle on the river. Boyne , the remnants of the Jacobite army took refuge in Limerick, which was considered impregnable. The ensuing siege entered Irish folklore as a heroic defeat, sealed in 1691 by the Limerick Accord .
In the second half of the XIX century, the city was in an economic crisis, but by the beginning of the XX century it revived, becoming one of the largest railway junctions in Ireland . April 9, 1919 the city was declared a military zone. Limerick unions went on strike against English militarism. As a result, the strikers seized power and on April 15-27 , 1919 the city was the capital of the Soviet Limerick republic.
