Biography

He began to study music from childhood, studied theory and played bandurria (the Spanish version of the lute). At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1898, he performed in the presence of French President Felix Faure . After hearing the performance of Francisco Tarrega , he became interested in the classical guitar and for seven years (1902-1909) took lessons from him. Tarrega's school made Puhol a brilliant guitarist, and already in 1912 he performed with great success with recitals in London and Madrid . Pujol then toured in other European countries and in South America. In contrast to his contemporary Andres Segovia , who played with both fingertips and nails, Puhol adhered to Tarrega's technique, who preferred to extract sound only with his fingertips, achieving a softer, but also more limited in tone sound. Since 1945, he taught the game of viuel at the Barcelona Conservatory, performed and gave master classes as a guitarist and viuelist at the Lisbon Conservatory and other musical centers in Europe.

The legacy of the Composer Puchol includes more than a hundred original compositions for the guitar, as well as over three hundred transcriptions of the guitar from the lute and viuel repertoire. Pujol’s largest work is the four-volume Guitar School ( Escuela razonada de la guitarra, basada en los principios de la técnica de Tárrega ), in the first two parts of which (1934 and 1937) the principles of Tarrega’s technique are set forth, and in the third and the fourth (1954 and 1971) - Puhol's own pedagogical considerations.

Pujol actively contributed to the popularization of vihuela and ancient composers who wrote for her. He wrote articles on this area of Spanish music and several books, including a biography of Tarrega (1960).
