Content
Story
Great Ustyug beginning of the XVII century . Simon Dezhnev falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy merchant - Avdotya, but the groom is poor. The girl’s father sets a condition: Dezhnev must go to Siberia and get rich - only then will he get consent to get married. Dezhnev agrees and leaves for Siberia. Although he passes the test, he does not return to Avdotya. He finds the strait "from the warm sea to the cold": from the mouth of the Kolyma, he swims to the Pacific Ocean and opens the strait between the continents.
The film begins and ends by reading the petition of Dezhnev to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, in which he asks the tsar to have mercy: “Merciful sovereign, they ordered me to be given a legitimate salary for all past years so that I, your servant, should not be killed in bondage, not to die in the end, but continue to serve your services ”, and also not to forget“ my comrades ”.

Creature. Criticism
N. Gusarov saw his task in telling about Russian pioneers, whose names, in his opinion, are less known to the viewer than the name of Columbus [1] . Gusarov considered the main features of his hero to be kindness and a sense of justice [2] . He abandoned the vulgarity and fabulousness and shot in the style of psychological drama, in a harsh manner, to show the difficulties that the hero experienced [2] .
The film was shot near Sverdlovsk , in Magadan , in Pskov , in Chukotka [1] . A fortress was built especially for filming on the Chusovaya River , and the workers of the Solombala shipyard built two sailboats [1] .
Film critic V. Kichin praised the authors of the film for historical authenticity, tactfully developed everyday details around historical characters [3] . The critic, on the one hand, welcomed the lack of mythologization and romanticization of history in the film, on the other hand, blamed the authors for not having enough freedom to use the material [3] .
