General Information
- Creature
The FIA Formula 2 Championship was created on the eve of 2009 as a cheaper alternative to the GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5 championships that already existed at that time. The embodied concept assumed a single-team monoform championship, where, to equalize the capabilities of the pilots, after each stage, rotation of the racing engineers took place inside the peloton. The organization chosen to manage the operation of the series - MotorSport Vision - previously had the experience of organizing a similar championship at a lower level: the Formula Palmer Audi championship, which at one time was created as an alternative to the British Formula 3 . Williams F1 and Audi were the technical suppliers of the new series, creating, upon the request of the organizers of the chassis with a very limited volume of aerodynamic elements [1], and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that complies with the FIA safety regulations for similar equipment from 2005. [2] The total weight of the car was 907 kg, and its maximum speed is 241 km / h. The rider was also given the opportunity to use a special “accelerator” during the races, which raised the engine power from 400 to 450 hp.
- Weekend format and points system
Each weekend of the series consisted of two 175-kilometer races (later their distance was revised to a 40-minute time limit), each of which was preceded by a 90-minute training and an hour-long qualification. The preparation of each machine was centralized by MSV, which regularly ran equipment inside the peloton. Only the results of the pilots in the races were counted in the championship, bonus points were not provided.
- The detailed points scheme is as follows:
| one | 2 | 3 | four | five | 6 | 7 | eight | 9 | ten | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| year 2009 | ten | eight | 6 | five | four | 3 | 2 | one | 0 | 0 |
| 2010-12 years | 25 | 18 | 15 | 12 | ten | eight | 6 | four | 2 | one |
- Functioning
The series lasted four seasons, but did not bring any of its winners to Formula 1 and on the eve of the 2013 season, due to an insufficient number of applications, it was closed. More than anyone else in connection with the championship, the name of Henry Sertis , who died in July 2009 from injuries sustained during the series stage on the Brands Hatch, is known. [3]
